Resilient Eyes

“One thing I do know, I was blind but now I see!” (John 9:25b)

Yesterday, I consulted an eye doctor (a glaucoma specialist) referred by my sister’s friend for 2nd opinion. The first doctor actually asked me to undergo laser iridectomy, that’s why I wanted to have a 2nd opinion, because the procedure is quite expensive, not invasive though as he claims it to be. He’s actually not a glaucoma specialist so he can be wrong with his diagnosis which led me to decide to consult a glaucoma specialist.

I already visited the 2nd doctor twice, 1st was 2 Saturdays ago. During my 1st visit, I was asked to stop applying my eyedrops to observe what’s really going on with my eyes without it, since I was still continuing my eyedrops for maintenance, he saw nothing wrong with my eyes (drainage canals between the iris and cornea or “angles” are wide open and I have healthy optic nerves after dilating the eye pupil). I remember the first time they dilated my eyes (placing 3 drops), I wasn’t able to see things clearly, sun too bright as in super extra-bright even if it was cloudy then, can’t read jeepney signs, too blurry, at least I saw the yellow car and the cab drove me home. So next time if you will visit an eye doctor, make sure not to drive a car (or at least have a driver with you), and bring sunglasses to protect your eyes from bright sunlight due to dilation.

On my 2nd visit, after 2 weeks of no medication, checked my eye and again angles wide open and I have healthy nerves. My doctor said, “I don’t know if it’s good or bad news for you, but you do not have glaucoma. You don’t need laser.” He must have seen question in my eyes, puzzled and wanting answers as to why my eyes felt discomfort and heavy after prolonged exposure to computer. He just said, “If you don’t have glaucoma, even if you stare in front of the computer for 24 hours, you won’t still have it”. A mystery yet to be solved, I’ll just go back if ever I encounter the same pressure or heaviness. Nevertheless, I’m still grateful and thankful to God that I have resilient eyes :)

Better take care of your eyes when you’re still young and grade’s 20/20, you may never know how important it is ’til it’s gone. Health is really wealth. Just like my friend (Ja) once was saying, you’re earning now to save for your future's health expense, health which gradually deteriorates as we age. Sounds ironic but it could be true. BOW, haha!
